Biden on Obama's VP Pick: 'I'm Not The Guy'
August 19, 2008 5:21 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf and Jennifer Parker report: As Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was leaving his house in Wilmington this afternoon, he slowed down and said to the gathered news reporters outside his home: "Hey guys, I'm not the guy. See ya."
Members of the news media camped outside his Wilmington home today as speculation swirled that Biden is on Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's short list of vice presidential candidates.
Lowering expectations is a game played by many vice-presidential wannabes. A Biden Senate staffer told ABC News today that the senator had not spoken to anyone at the Obama campaign about the vice presidential slot Tuesday.
Biden, the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, raised his profile recently by traveling on a fact-finding mission to war-torn Georgia, where he called for increased US aid to the country and peacekeeping forces.
The trip underscored his vast foreign policy experience -- something that is lacking from Obama's resume. Biden is also thought to be someone who could hold his own during a vice presidential debate.
However the senator's loquacious speaking style sometimes gets him in trouble. As a longtime Washington senator, Biden could also work against Obama's outside-the-beltway style campaign.
Biden is spending time in his home state while Congress is in summer recess. As Biden left news media camped outside his home, reporters could see he had golf clubs in his truck.
UPDATE:
Biden returned from his outing to dial back his "its not me" statement from earlier.
He rolled down his passenger side window and said to reporters don't you have anything better to do?
The "It's not me" from earlier is now "I have not spoken with anyone" repeated several times to several different questions.
Have you spoken to the Obama campaign?
"I have not spoken to anyone."
So you're not ruling out you could be picked?
"I have not spoken to anyone."
"You guys know as well as I do,' he said as he drove down his driveway with admonitions that your staker outers should be careful on the treacherous road outside his house.

That's a smart guy.

That really sucks... I was praying it was Biden. That means its gotta be Kaine... Bayh's a lame duck.
Posted by: Blake | Aug 19, 2008 5:36:36 PM
Its Kaine...Kaine is the only one among likely pick who donot have a speaking slot at convention
Posted by: Its Kaine | Aug 19, 2008 5:38:55 PM
The backlash if he didn't pick Biden at this point would lose them the election. So if it isn't Biden they were really dumb... he is the only candidate that 2 out of 3 voters were supportive of.
Picking someone else would seem like Obama does not have the judgement or the right ego to be President ...
that's why I think Biden has to be throwing the press a headfake.
I think the fall out from letting it go this long at this point would be really damaging.

Very Concise comment Ick. How about sharing your great wisdom as to who should be picked for VP?
Posted by: slubobo | Aug 19, 2008 5:41:05 PM
He has been talking about announcing his VP for months, and yet hasn't come out with it. If not Biden, then maybe Clinton who is 50:1. None of the others choices have any foreign policy experience. Pelosi wants it, but her book was not on the top seller list, so she is out. Can't wait and signed up to hear on the text messaging!!

NEWS FLASH - Lots of rumors around Cleveland today as a result of a local radio talk show host saying that he has insider info that it will be....... HILLARY. HE IS A PRETTY CREDIBLE GUY!! I really think that Obama is beginning to realize that he might not win without her. As a Repub, I am not sure how that would play out? She would bring in lots of her voters, but on the other hand it could also rally many of the independents for McCain. Hard to say.

All forgotten now and new hype about VP selection.
http://townhall.com/columnists/PhyllisSchlafly/2008/08/19/obama_running_on_the_cult_of_personality
“Obama's books reveal him as having the personality of a man embittered by being abandoned by his African father and his unconventional white mother, and who came to believe that race is the issue that trumps all else and must be used for the redistribution of power and wealth. Obama sought out relationships with the socialist-radical Saul Alinsky, the unapologetic bomb-thrower Bill Ayers and his Weather Underground associate Bernardine Dohrn, the Communist poet Frank Marshall Davis, leftwing Muslim-supporting politicians in Kenya, the corrupt political fixer Tony Rezko, and the black-liberation-theology Rev. Jeremiah Wright who preaches hate America and accuses the United States of creating the AIDS virus to kill blacks”.

Of course, it's Biden. Joe is known for his sense of dry, ironic humor. By 'the guy', Biden was probabl referring to the Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama. But, the recent actions and comments of Biden, Obama, and Biden's Senate office tell a different story. A joking "non-denial denial" to now stalking media horde...
Posted by: Tommy Ates | Aug 19, 2008 5:49:16 PM
It's beginning to look more and more like Obama will pick Hillary. He can't win without Hillary. Sorry, Obamabots, Hillary controls Obama now!
Posted by: david from texas | Aug 19, 2008 5:50:37 PM
Biden blew it. Just couldn't keep his mouth shut. Just couldn't play along with the game. Has to let you know he's smarter than everyone else. But its obvious now. Obama really does want to win at all costs. And he's picked HRC.
Posted by: In the Know | Aug 19, 2008 5:50:41 PM
I really hope it is Biden. His Foreign Policy experience is too good for Sen.Obama to ignore. But if not him I would suspect Gov.Bill Richardson or Evan Bayh. Richardson is good on energy and foreign policy. Plus he could win Hispanic votes. Bayh seems boring. Which Obama might need to keep the focus on him.
Posted by: Jacob | Aug 19, 2008 5:53:08 PM
Theoretically, Biden shouldn't know whether he is "the guy" or not.
Posted by: jock59801 | Aug 19, 2008 5:53:10 PM
Obama should declare himself as the VP. Let Hillary carry him to the office 8 years from now. 8 more years for Americans to know more about him. 8 more years for him to show that he's heart and soul an American.

He Can't Win Without Her!
Posted by: Louis Jacinto | Aug 19, 2008 5:53:23 PM
As an obama supporter,
I like Biden, but I am glad he will not be VP.
Half the people who want him have no idea of his ties to the credit industry or his voting record. (as it relates to middle class)
Thank God.
Obama 08
Posted by: Sally | Aug 19, 2008 5:55:07 PM
Why would Obama agree to let HRC have a roll call vote that would derail his convention? He wouldn't. He knows it will never happen. Why not? Because she's the VP, and she'll call it off, and her supporters won't care. It's looking pretty obvious now, isn't it? Maybe he's a bit more savvy, and has a bit more killer instinct, than we thought! My prediction: Bill speaks on Tuesday night, and HRC goes on Wednesday.
Posted by: DC Don | Aug 19, 2008 5:56:16 PM
Wound't read anything into this necesarily.Don't forget Jake Tapper was reporting earlier that Obama hadn't spoken to the VP nominee yet. However i still think the eventual name may be somone who hasn't been talked about too much at the moment. Maybe a Wes Clark type.
Posted by: markymark | Aug 19, 2008 5:56:23 PM
this whole thing is bad at this point
people starting to think it's Hillary..
are you kidding if he picked Hillary over Biden at this point that would be REALLY BAD
Kaine would be bad...
Bayh would be bad...
The only guy who he could have picked over Biden at this point was Gore...
and now because they are playing games they are going to get these PUMA whack jobs up in arms again...
oy what are they thinking...
just make the freakin announcement...because if it's Biden...they just shot themselves in the foot for not telling him
If it's not Biden...they just themselves in the head.
Posted by: dl | Aug 19, 2008 5:56:50 PM
he can't win with her either. No one wants Obama
Posted by: Marty in Iowa | Aug 19, 2008 5:58:30 PM
I will bet a 100 bucks its going to be Wesley Clark. Bayh, biden and kaine are just distractions to send the media on a wild goose chase.
Posted by: sandy | Aug 19, 2008 5:58:43 PM
He better stick with Hilliary. Google "JFK secret service stand down" if you don't know why.
Posted by: ick! | Aug 19, 2008 5:59:29 PM
maybe he will pick Michelle
Posted by: Marty in Iowa | Aug 19, 2008 6:00:06 PM
You just keep doing the thinking, Marty in Iowa, that's what you're good at...
Posted by: slubobo | Aug 19, 2008 6:00:26 PM
Unfortunately, I don't think it's Hillary. If it isn't, I'll never vote for Obama and in fact am ardently rooting for him to lose.
Posted by: Cardsgal | Aug 19, 2008 6:01:01 PM
sally
it's the people that don't know Biden's record that focus on the credit card thing...a mixed issue at best...
do you realize his record over the past 6 months?
do you realize that Obama needs familiarity more than anything
that he needs a face that America knows and trusts more than any other issue
that his experience in dealing with the cultures and pols of the world is unparalleled...
the list is long...and strong ...a lot stronger than the couple of marks against him
that is why most of America thought he was a good pick...
unlike every other candidate he was looking at.
to not pick Biden would hurt his judgement at this point...makinghis ego out to be bigger than it should be...

It's going to be Hillary. Obama may not know much about foreign policy, the economy, abortion, etc., but he does know politics.
If Barry picks Hillary, he wins. If he doesn't, he's a 50/50 shot.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he's picking Hillary.
Posted by: stickety | Aug 19, 2008 6:03:32 PM
It's Hillary. Even if he didn't want her, I don't think he has any choice. Of course, she may not take it, but I think she will. The other choices would be chopped liver and Obama wants to win, so he convinced Michelle that it is what he needed to do and she finally agreed.
Posted by: Susan | Aug 19, 2008 6:03:49 PM
Joe Biden will probably be VP, Bayh would be my next choice, then Kaine
Posted by: Matt.G | Aug 19, 2008 6:04:06 PM
What happened to Wesley Clark that some were pushing? Biden would be OK by me, but Clark would also be OK. It's hard for me to get enthusiastic, above "OK" level. I supported Biden and also Huckabee on the Repub side. Huck would be the best president on the Repub side, but if McCain has enough brains to pick him, it might put him over the top in November. Huckabee just got back from Israel where he was received with REAL warmth. What he says about the situation there makes much more sense than anyone else.

some of you people are quite dense
-no biden is not the pick
-no hes not giving a "head fake" =P
-no he was not talking about something else when he said "i'm not the guy"
-no this doesn't mean he's picking hillary...you dolts.
....sometimes i'm quite surprised by the stupidity of people who somehow manage to be "politically active"
Posted by: izz | Aug 19, 2008 6:05:18 PM
As a dem I will be voting Obama, but it sure would make it less stressful if he picked Hillary. She won in OH and could possibly help Obama take OH. Hillary won every rural area and Obama would take the cities. Would be close, but I think they could do it. Many here are waiting to see who he picks as VP. Any other election it wouldn't make any difference. But for some reason, at least where I live, it does.
Posted by: Miki | Aug 19, 2008 6:05:43 PM
Clinton has lots of baggage. Biden has experience but would be labeled same ol' politics = no change. Obama's in a tough spot now that Edwards has had such as scandal.
Posted by: Nate | Aug 19, 2008 6:06:05 PM
This is what irks me about Obama. He takes his time in announcing his VP pick and lets the media clamour all over themselves to get the scoop. It's just another way the Obama campaign gets a lot of media attention. I was a Hillary supporter and this is one thing I couldn't stand about this guy. Once he picks his VP, which I believe will be a dud, will give him a little bump but then it will go back to being close again. As a democrat, I feel jerked around. I'm sure it won't be Hillary. You know Bill could be VP. That would be a kicker. Just because he was Potus that doesn't mean he can't be VP. Just kidding HaHaHa.
Posted by: Lois, California | Aug 19, 2008 6:07:09 PM
Biden was just trying to get rid of the media so he could go golfing. Biden HAS to be Obama's choice. Biden has the foreign policy experience Obama and America needs to make this a dream team. Also Biden is a great attack dog, and we need him in this campaign. I'm tired of McSurge not getting punched back, Obama is just a little tooo nice when it comes to mud-slinging with the Republicans. Biden has to be the guy. He's the kind of bare knuckle brawler Obama needs to fight these Republican war mongers.
Posted by: Sue H | Aug 19, 2008 6:07:09 PM
I cannot vote for a ticket with Hillary on there. I just cannot stomach her or Bill now. I will just be done.
Posted by: disappointed | Aug 19, 2008 6:07:16 PM
oh and one last thing:
-the "fallout" from not picking biden or from not picking hillary wouldn't crush him... what a joke that someone is crushed by who they DIDN'T pick for the lowly VP...
Posted by: izz | Aug 19, 2008 6:08:51 PM
Way to go Joe. Would hate to see you waste your career on this guy who has zero experience, no record of accomplishment, and lacks the trust of Americans. Remember, BO was voting present in the Illinois state legislature just 4 years ago. Luckily for we Hillary Democrats, John McCain offers hope for peace, prosperity, and security.
Posted by: benvictor | Aug 19, 2008 6:09:04 PM
Yeah, like, if it isn't Hillary I like totally want Roe v. Wade to be repealed and the Iraq War to deepen. Hillary-- it's like all about the issues.
Hillaristas, saying "now HRC controls Obama!" just reveals once again why she won't be picked. An African-American is just supposed to vote for Clintons, not govern over them I guess.
Posted by: Hillarious | Aug 19, 2008 6:09:07 PM
The awesome internationl relations experience/understanding of Senator Biden is vital to Senator Obama's candadicy. If Obama doesn't select him for VP; I'm going to do a write-in and it will be my son!

CLINTON
BIDEN
GENERAL CLARK
RICHARDSON

Posted by: Angry Democrat | Aug 19, 2008 6:09:55 PM
I'm a McCain guy, but trying to look at this objectively, I doubt that it will be Biden. In many ways Joe is more Repub than Dem - THE MOVE ON GROUPS WILL NOT LET OBAMA MAKE THAT MOVE. As I said earlier - it looks like Hillary will be the one!!
Posted by: Temagami | Aug 19, 2008 6:10:02 PM
AH..Powell is a republican! If Obama picks a republican, then we might as well vote Mcain.
Posted by: Hannah | Aug 19, 2008 6:10:05 PM
Obama said he would not let anyone question his love for this country. Well, he missed the point. It's not that he will or won't let people question. As the candidate from a major party, it should be moot for anyone to question his American root - at least half of it. If almost 40% of the people still have question about this issue of his, he's just not ready. Period. By the time people get into their voting booths, they will think of him more like a Kenyan running to be the US president.
Posted by: Obama-Yah-Wright | Aug 19, 2008 6:12:34 PM
THE TRUE DEMOCRATS WANT HILLARY! IT'S ALL THESE NEW PEOPLE (WELCOME) THAT DON'T. SHE IS A HUGE PART OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY. HELLO HATERS HILLARY GOT MORE VOTES THEN OBAMA. HE GOT THE MORE DELIGETS (NOT MANY MORE) OBAMA SUPPORTS (I'M ONE OF THEM) HAVE TO STOP WITH THEIR HATE OR OBAMA WILL LOSE.
Posted by: DKR | Aug 19, 2008 6:13:14 PM
Pretty stupid that people don't realize how credible Biden is through the eyes of world leaders. I mean the Georgian president requested that Biden come to Georgia personally after Condeleeza Rice left. That tells me alot. I have been a fan of Biden since I met him here back in December. I may not agree with all of his views, but his no BS attitude is what I need out of someone in the White House. I hope this was just a joke, but sadly I think Obama is going to blow his chances at the WH by picking someone as inexperienced as wishy washy as himself.

I really like Sam Nunn.
I know he's been out of the public eye for a while, but he was very well respected and well-liked, and he's a real tough old bird who knows the military and knows foreign policy. I'd like to see someone directly challenge McCain's military strategy (or lack thereof).

Frankly, I've been reading a lot of these blogs. Man, are most of the bloggers stupid! This election has really made me realize how many ignornant bigoted "Americans" still exist.
A lot of Americans would rather lose their country than lose an election!
Obama and his smooth running campaign is going to surprise and irritate most repugs with his VP choice! If the Pundits, some American citizens and repugs keep saying that they don't know Obama how can any of you or them even contemplate what choices he will make? Just shut up and keep your unintellegent comments to yourselves.

You're right running for President is despicable.
Get a life. Both Clinton and Obama did things they shouldn't have.
Obama supports need to get over it. I find so many of you are the racist ones. It's very true that Obama wouldn't be where he is if he weren't black. A lot of people (not me) have a huge problem with that.

Hillary does not control Obama. It's not about control, it's about taking the White House with a winning ticket.I've had to suck it up and make a decision to vote for Obama, even though I would prefer Hillary. Obama is a politician just like the rest of them.He knows how to play the game. He's thrown plenty of zingers and his "present" votes were strategic. Old Politics... No such thing. It's just politics. Let's just win already.

Sebelius would be fanatastic: a governor, a woman, and not a beltway insider. Biden would be OK as a bench coach, maybe Sec of State. Clark would wipe McCain's butt off the map. Hillary might be the "winning" choice, then have her resign to become secretary of Health and Housing, and putting another in her place. Anyway, we'll all find out in 8 days or less.

There is no way Obama can go with one of the democrats who also ran for president this year and not choose Hillary. Wesley Clark didn't go over so well when he disrespected McCain's military service. The only other possible choices who have been mentioned are Bayh and Kaine. While they might not hurt him, they won't help him. Hillary will help him.

I have had the pleasure of voting for Biden EVERY SINGLE TIME he was on the ballot, and I was a voter. He's a great guy, and most people in Delaware (the first state - we're really smart like that!!!) love him. BUT, I'm voting for McCain. If Obama/Biden wins, I will sleep better at night knowing Biden is there to help the crazy fool out of any situation he can't handle.

Why would choose Hillary Clinton whose 'revised' campaign John McCain has co-opted against Obama? Hillary has flung so much mud against Obama and with Bill lingering feud against Barack, a Hillary pick would make Obama seem weak + with the Clinton side show. Will the Democrats ever escape the Clintons? Are we THAT WEAK??

The Democrats want Hillary, Obama should stop being selfish and do what the party wants!
If it were the other way around (it should be) Hillary would have pick Obama for VP along time ago. She knows how to bring the party together. Obama not so much!

many more millions flock to hear the pope speak, but no way in hell should he be our President

If he doesn't pick Hillary, he's in trouble. People say, "oh, she will be so hard to control, her and Bill, when he's President." Well, it's better than not being in the White House AT ALL, which is more than likely without Clinton as the VP.

I think it's Kaine
or Wesley Clark
Hillary just like McCain will do anything to win...and that = old politics... that's exactly what Obama wants to CHANGE. Also consider that Bill Clinton will be a drag for the campaign... we don't need that.
We need to remember that old say... that encourages us to watch how we deal with our enemies... we never know when we are going to need them. I can't wait to see that bomerang.

I hope Obama picks someone with tendencies to tax big oil, like Obama wants to do. Then when Americans figure out that those taxes will be passed on at the pump, Obama will be toast.

weakness is going with the flow that has no substance and making false accusations of racism against those with sound and logical arguments against your candidate

POTUS for Obama is still being decided. But if he chose to be POK, it would definitely be unstoppable.

My guess has been Clinton since Obama said in an interview that everyone will be really surprised by his pick and judging by the fact that he hasn't campaigned in Ark. Does this make him weak, not at all. I think he probably planned on picking her from the beginning but these loud mouthed Clinton whiners wouldn't shut up so he had to wait. It will be a doubly historic ticket this way and a great presidency to boot.

"because i love my son and I am obligated to make the best choice for him, I will vote for Senator Clinton on November 4th, even if I have to write her name in"
CHRIS -- you're lying to yourself - how is that the best choice for your son???
if we had to vote on whether your son was going to have meatloaf or poison for dinner (and i knew that about half the count
