Speculation is building Biden will be named Obama's running mate.
Speculation is building Biden will be named Obama's running mate.

(CNN) – When Joe Biden returns to Capitol Hill Monday from his two-day trip to embattled Georgia, vice presidential speculation will rest squarely on him.

The longtime Delaware senator and former presidential candidate has long been considered to be on the shortlist for Barack Obama's running mate, but his quickly-planned trip to Georgia Saturday night at the behest of that country's president left Washington buzzing he is the most likely choice.

Watch: Will it be Biden?

After all, the Georgia crisis appears to have put national security issues again at the forefront of the presidential campaign, and it's an issue where John McCain has long held the advantage over Obama. The Illinois senator, so the Beltway chatter goes, needs a running-mate with foreign policy experience now more than ever.

If Biden does aspire to be on the Democratic presidential ticket, the trip couldn't have come at a better time — reinforcing his lengthy resume on matters of foreign policy and reminding voters, and Obama, he is well respected by foreign leaders half a world away.

The trip also comes days before Obama is expected to reveal his VP choice — with only days remaining until the Democratic convention, the choice is expected to come this week.

CNN Political Market: Biden's stock on the rise

But of course Biden suggested before he left Saturday he isn't making the trip for political reasons.
"I am going to Georgia this weekend to get the facts first-hand and to show my support for Georgia’s people and its democratically-elected government," he said in a statement. "I look forward to reporting to my colleagues in the Senate and on the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as the Administration, about what I learn."

He may have one or two conversations with his colleague from Illinois too.

Biden is the best pick. I believed Obama/Clinton would have been the dream ticket, but Clinton brings too much baggage. Because if you get Hillary, you also get Bill.

Joe Biden knows how to handle the Righties, he's also very strong in foreigh affairs. With Biden, Obama can't lose!

And for you Clinton supporters, your candidate ran a bad campaign get over it and stop using scapegoats to justify your defeat. This is a critical election and we can't help votes made or not made over spite. This is ridiculous, you all are old enough to vote, so start acting like grown ups, and do the responsible thing. Vote for the candidate that supports your ideas and views.

If you want America BACK people, Obama is the key. I have been a registered Republican all my life. Now I am not so sure about the policies of the Republican Party. Too bad, but now I am going to vote for the person who is for the little people because that is what most Americans are today. Not rich and priviledged like GW Bush and McCain (who's wife by the way is a multimillionaire). I just want a politician who can relate to; which bill should I pay this week (the phone or the car payment)? Do you really think the aforementioned politians know anything about how most Americans struggle? Me, I am voting for the man who has been there, and can still remember and isn't ashamed to talk about his struggles. Come on people, THINK, make a good decision!

i am shocked people are willing to allow politics play a role in winning the white house. people are stating that they will not vote if hillary is not on the ticket….that means u will allow someone who disagrees with ur belief to continue the bush-cheney yrs. Biden is the best person on foreign policy Obama can pick.

Biden?? The plagiarist? The loud mouth? bring him on!

What does Obama represent anyway?   August 18th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Being a long time democrat who has voted since President Carter's time, I find it hard to believe that I can not even force myself to vote for Obama.
I won't go into detail as to why I won't vote for him but I will give some clues;
1. Obama's voting for FISA and the allowing the telecommunications act to stay intact with added repressions on american's privacy (stamping on our 4th amendment rights, undercutting our freedoms)
2. Lack of politcal stances that one can count on. He has swung so many times in the last couple of months from saying he will do one thing and doing another. I just don't trust him.
3. His dissing of HRC and our ex-president Bill Clinton who he allowed his entire troop of followers to join in saying that he was a racist. Unbelievable lack of respect for the democrats greatest president in our lifetime.
4. DNC's rigging of having Obama nominated and I won't go into detail because Everyone knows the story.
I'll be voting for McCain because I trust him. I do not like a number of his policies because I am and have been a pretty progressive democrat all of my life. I'll tell you one thing though; I will not allow the DNC to force a candidate down my throat and then
believe that us old democrats are between a rock and a hard place and that we have no choice other than voting for Obama. I think that the DNC needs to learn a lesson and lose this election and I'll just wait until the 4 years have gone by with McCain as president and see whether the democratic party has restored themselves to some semblance of sanity. I'm not alone in these thoughts, there are many many loyal democrats in this same position that I am in. It will cost Obama plenty of votes.

Obama has no control over Bill or Hillary and that is exactly why she cannot be the VP. They are both out of control.

An interivewer told Dick Chenney that most American people thought the war in Iraq was not necessary, he looked straight in the interviewers face and said " I don't care what the american people think" . That was OK because Chenney said it. Biden is the only other person that could do that.

Look for grandpa McMunster to annouce his candidate soon after Obama. McCain has no original thoughts and he's more obsessed with Obama than the media is. His commercials talk more about Obama than himself!

I'm sure that McCain will pick someone that shares his affection with ABBA and that who will have no problems dancing with him to "Dancing Queen."

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

John McCain. Turning the red states pink.

Those PUMA supporters are going to get a rude awakening if McCain actually wins and suddenly starts stripping our country of what few rights Bush didn't take away. I'm pretty sure HRC never came out in favor of greater tax breaks for the rich, a Supreme Court in the mold of Alito and Scalia, and a country without legal access to safe abortions.

Obama and Biden will do a great job, and will make me even prouder to be a young, educated American Soldier as opposed to an old, scared, illiterate white cracker.

It works both ways!! The fact that because Obama did poorly at that forum, his kool-aid drinking followers now want to discredit it! Obama is using gutter politics straight fr so. side of Chicago!

Biden has his strengths from Obama's perspective.

Biden's run for President twice … there likely is ZERO baggage lurking with him.

A democrat would most likely succeed Biden in the Senate seat from Delaware.

Biden won't take no bull ____ t from the GOP. He'll make a good "bad" cop. That would play well in Appalachia.

Biden shores up the foriegn affairs element of the team.

Barack trusts that Biden's intentions are honorable.

That trust means that Barack can work with Biden as his final consigliere.

A good team ….

Stop degrading Obama supporters. Many of us are highly educated. I have a graduate degree, and I have been voting since 1976 so I know a thing or two, also, about American democracy. All of us are committed to making sure our country doesn't continue down the wrong path, as it has for the last eight years.

I can't wait for him to make this pick, so that my instinct about him will be proven correct. That America's flawed election process picked the wrong nominee, and that he is not the best candidate. The only way he is getting hillary's voters is to have her as his running mate, since it doesn't appear he is going to do that, then he won't get my vote or the vote of many other hillary supporters. Good Luck cheater

John   August 18th, 2008 11:15 am ET

Biden is a very wise choice to manage the White House under the leadership of Obama. Biden is certainly the "anti-Cheney" who holds the title of the most creepy VP in modern times. The republicans don't have a pool of VP choices that Americans feel they can trust. It's time to have an open, and friendly White House that doesn't believe "honesty is the definition of weakness" as Bush and Cheney have shown. January 2009 can't come soon enough for me, because we need to show the international community that we can be trusted, and respected. Bush has caused our friendly allies to despise America, not to mention our political adversaries.

Lee, New York City   August 18th, 2008 11:15 am ET

Biden is a big blow hard….anytime you see him on TV or C-Span, he's rambling on and on, enjoying hearing himself talk. He is in love with himself and brings NOTHING to the table for Obama (except some experience which Obama lacks).

Obama is not doing so well now in the polls because people are seeing him having to handle questions and he doesn't have a script in front of him.

HE IS TOO INEXPERIENCED TO BE PRESIDENT. He will lose in November and Hitlery will run in 2012 (and bring Bill along for the ride).

Yes we believe Obama will win. God Bless America and protect us all. God Bless Obama.
Keep on the good work Obama attack forcefully those lies about you by senator McCainflip flopper. he can't win on the issues nor can he win only about wars rumour. So, Mccain wants to play on people's mind that Obama is risky-or scary. whereas Mccainflip floper is more riskier choice than anyone in the country because he has no position.

Mccainflip flopper has too many confusing positions on anything. that is rsiky. McCainflip flopper knows how to win wars, although no known war Mccainflip flopper have won. That is rsiky. Mcflip flopper dumped his wife for a rich woman that is rsiky. Mcflip flopper have too many ties with corrupt politicians and he is part of the failed economy. That is risky. Senator Mcflip flopper voted with George Bush 95% of the time, but yet he denied when this is worst now. So telly you the truth is very risky. Haven't mention all these risky activities about Mcflip flopper , people who still want to vote for Mcflip flopper is more riskier than Mcflip flopper. He can win if you do not vote for him, so you are more riskier than Mcflip flopper if you think he will fix thing better than Bush.

I am responding to the last article about Richardson on ease with Hillary Clinton name place on ballot.

I am surprise that so many Hillary supporters do not like Obama even as Hillary campaign for him.

Both senators' presidential platform are 95% the same. Why don't them like Obama? I got it, because he is a black mix or he is democrats and those 18 million people that voted for Hillary not are all democrats.

There is no reason not to vote for a candidate that have the same plans as your failed candidate.
So people when writting your blog I hate Obama, state your reason so we will know why.

State if you are really a democrats, if you don't like black mix male, or you just love Hillary to death.

It is easy to criticize people what they do wrong, but when the ball is in your shoes you stumble and fall. If you are so perfect you may as well run for the Office. Obama have said manytimes that he is not a perfect person and he needs your help. He wants you to beleive that this Country can be as strong as it was 8 years agon when people have enough. He wants you to beleive that we can develope new energy , new cars that use less gas, that America can lead in new 21th technologies.

I do not think that Biden is tbe best choice in Obama wants a boast on his domestic credentials. The best choice for that would have to be Richardson.

He can also be an effective attack dog doing the more aggressive rebuttals to the Republican smear machine as well as doing well in V.P. debates. Well if this is true, Obama has just lost a key demographic for him to win in November: women over 40 who supported Hillary will consider a choice of a white guy who received no votes as the final "slap in the face" to women, who supported Hillary's historic candidacy. If the situation were reversed and Hillary had won by only a handful of delegates, Obama had received 18 million votes, and then she selected an unknown white male as VP instead of Obama, African Americans would be in the streets protesting in Denver and the Democratic party would come apart at the seams. Women may not be in the streets in November but many won't be voting for Obama/White Guy in November either.

m.pvoentud   August 18th, 2008 11:10 am ET

In my opinion Senator, Obama should pick Senator Biden,
He'll make a good Vice president, also God forbid, (my prayers is with him always) anything happen to Obama, he is ready to command. He is also strong in foreign afairs, and should shut up McCain.

Hillary would be a big mistake, I'm sorry to say that, in so many ways–one her negative is too high–two her husband(they say a president always is is president) and you can not give your opponent anything to interfere with Obama policies. –three Clinton adultery in the oval office, it will be a reminder, and some of us we don't want to be reminded, I have more but let stop there.

HEY, "18,000,000 plus the disenfranchised"!

Do you know how to get anything fixed in this country! … do you? no?!…

Then support someone, run for office yourself, or SHUT UP!

Complaints and endless criticisms do nothing to fix the problems we all face, unless they are coupled with possible solutions.

Think about solutions before you just idiotically pop off at the mouth!

You would really waste the greatest right and privelege we hold as Americans-our right to vote- on a write in for hillary and risk the republican idiot machine to stay in place just because you enjoy hearing yourselves whine about Hillary?? She lost. get over it. Be mature and use your vote properly.

Biden would be a great VP as would many others. None would be as big liar as McCain, who knew questions in advance for the religious forum and implied clearly that he did not when asked. Everyone loved his short answers that his advIsors handed to him in advance! Plus he made up the cross in the dirt story. McCain is a fake! McCain is a fake Christian, McCain is a fake hero, MCCain is a fake person, MCCAIN IS A FAKE.!

LYNNE KIEPER   August 18th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Joe Biden as VP pick is the only reason I'll vote for Obama. My first choice was Biden because of his honesty, wisdom, and voting record. Hillary would have been acceptable too, but only with Biden as VP. He won't tolerate duplicity, political pandering and even his slight tendency to deviate from the "script" is refreshing and long over due in our political system. The man is of sterling character, strength and has a grasp of foriegn affairs that is unequaled. BIDEN ALL THE WAY!

Adam Habib Dallas, TX   August 18th, 2008 11:04 am ET

People who pretend to be Hllary supporter are really closet republicans, trying to cause uproar in democratic party. Hillary will have to realize that she LOST. So she and her big mouth Husband needs to go away forever ( take Monica too if that helps). I am tired of this couple.

While I do like Senator Biden, this only serves to prove that you DO need at least one old white guy on your ticket to win in November. McCain will most likely have two unless Condi feels like continuing on with this administration's insanity.

Clintonsucks   August 18th, 2008 11:03 am ET

All those "supposed" Clinton supports are moral hypocrites and idiots if they plan to write in Hiliary or vote McCain. If you do then I hope he wins and messes up this country some more, so I could see who you blame. Hillary would energize the Republicans and she would lose PERIOD. Her and her dirt bag husband are a black stain on the democratic party.

Also - Our founding fathers were liberals and if you dont believe me do some freaken research.

Clinton and McCain both have NO experience as commander an chief either. You dont get this until you are president.

Was Warren involved in the cover-up (which would not be surprising) or was he really unaware McCain was not in the cone of silence. Please, some serious reporting here. We knew McCain is confused, low-road, unable to come up with any solution, but a plain liar?

I admire Senator Biden for his toughness. He will make a great VP.

Note: My fellow Obama supporters please stop agitating the Hillary supporters by saying things like, "get over it." In two weeks all the "Hillary could still get the nomination" or "Obama is just the presumptive nominee" nonsense will be over. Party unity is our goal. Leave these people alone with their short-lived delusions. They are upset, it is understandable. Concentrate on getting new voters.

Super delegate NJ   August 18th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Vice Presidential candidates will have no effect on this election. Democrats have a flagrantly flawed candidate and they keep looking for ways to improve his image. They need at least 10 years and some major therapy for him. Hurry up and crown him in Denver and see what will happen thereafter.

Brad Burklow, Harrisburg, IL   August 18th, 2008 11:01 am ET

I like Biden and think he would be a good pick for vp overall. He would be a formidable attack dog for Obama, especially on national security. He's a sharp debater that seems to have improved on his earlier tendency to be a blowhardish wind bag. Another point in his favor that is lesser known is that he gives one of the best stump speeches around, compared to Bayh, who gives one of the worst. One could envision a 1-2 Biden-Obama rhetorical punch at the convention that would really get the emotional juices flowing for the home stretch run.

Yeah… that's it!! "All the great Democratic leaders must have turned Barack Obama down." That is the LEAST INFORMED, LEAST FACTUAL STATEMENT, LEAST INTELLIGENT STATEMENT regarding Obama's VP search. Which great leaders did you specifically were you talking about?? Care to name a few, or are you just spewing lame statements with no factual evidence to back it up.

Biden is currently one of the greatest Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill… and definitely MORE experienced in foreign policy than McCain or his choice for VP EVER will be. THAT is more than likely one of the deciding factors to make Biden his VP choice.

Our nation's current foreign policy is a train wreck, thanks to GWB and gang… it's time to restore our nation's glory BACK to what it was before GWB made our foreign policy the laughing stock of the world.

I think that Joe Biden would be an excellent choice for VP.

As for Sen. McCain possibly hearing some of the questions asked at the forum on Saturday I felt like he gave some of his answers too quickly as if he knew what was going to be asked. That just screams Karl Rove!

Gina in Racine Wi   August 18th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Just like I predicted that Obama would run (successfully) for the Presidency in 2008 (and he will) after hearing him speak at the 2004 Democratic Convention….I also have predicted that Biden would be Obama's running mate.

We are ready for Change and lets face it…..Biden shows strength where Obama is perceived to be weak (and that is just the GOP and the Media talking)….and vise versa.

Disgraceful that no comments were allowed for this blog!! Shame on you!

I like Biden, but I was hoping he would not select a member of the Senate, as the Dems will have the advantage of a majority rule in the House. I prefer a Governor, but, as long as it is not Hillary, I do not care

Joe Biden makes me want to shower in burning gasoline. Talk about the master of slime. If Obama really snubs half the voting party to pick someone other than Hillary, I will join the McCain camp and spend the balance of the season working a battleground state for him.

Plain and simple.

Larry D.   August 18th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Any Hillary supporter that won't vote for Obama yet thinks Hillary would have a chance in 2012 is dilusional. I would have voted for Hillary had she won the nomination this year.

The way she has turned her supporters into an angry mob, however, makes me realize that her whole presidency would just be about partisan anger, much like the last 10 years.

People like you are beyond help. There is an article on Huffington where Clinton's former chief of staff Panetta discusses how some of Hillary Clinton's supporters' sense of entitlement seems "inbred". I see what he is talking about. Joe Biden was accused of that 20 years ago. However, most of you are willing to vote for a man who cheated on and left his disable wife for a younger rich woman, and whose mother sued her disabled daughter in law for approximately $3,000.00 worth of crap. Really insightful of you.

Politico   August 18th, 2008 10:54 am ET

I loooove Joe Biden, but he has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth (even though I typically agree 100% with everything he's saying). If not VP, I'd love to see him as Secretary of State.

For the good of our Country he is a wise choice on anybody's list for the VP position. The Republicans and others should take special note of this highly qualified individual, especially in foreign affairs.

ujw, ny   August 18th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I agree that Biden is strong on foreign policy, and so would he be as Secretary of State. Imagine who you'd want for president if something happened to Obama - it's more than just foreign policy, plus he doesn't bring any battle ground states with him. Bayh may seem relatively unknown, and sort of vanilla, but they really love him in Indiana.

I was very supportive of Joe Biden during his primary campaign. Most people just didn't respond well to how direct/blunt he is, but that is a quality I like very much. I have been hoping for weeks that Biden would be the VP. We gotta get rid of these Republican clowns in the WH and hopefully get this country turned around.

bobie   August 18th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Obama needs Biden as VP. Since Obama has zero security or international experience, he needs a VP and a strong cabinet who can tell Obama what to do in crisis situations like in Russia/Georgia.

Obama needs a VP that can be his mentor and teach him how to run foreign affairs and how to protect this country.

Biden is a good pick for Obama.

Obama, look no farther, we have your man Sen. Joe Biden. Presidential canidate in his own rights. He just didn't get out of the gate right. But the man is ooozing with experience. One that I believe
won't mine, and rather relish in doing the "down under" work that's required of a VP. This should satisfy the "Experience" part of the ticket. Although Obama can hold his own in foreign matters.

I think without Hillary, Obama cannot win. There was too much animosity generated by the primary process, and party unity will be essential to beat McCain. Symbolic unity is not enough to unite the party.

Please, please, Obama, we know you think you know it all, but in this case, you need to listen. We cannot afford four more years of a Republican president. McCain is a bigger threat than you realize.

I am one of those people that had Biden for a first choice for Pres.but never an Obama no matter who he picks. We need a Biden on both tickets. But Obama won't pick him because I don't believe that Biden will be a "YES man" and bow down to Obama. What he wants is someone that won't rock is ego or call him down when needed. And what America needs if he is elected is someone that can keep a thumb on him but it will never happen.

The way he said it through clinched teeth - just what we need in this country to tell the Republicans that they've had 14 years of controll and have messed it up big time…time for the Democrats to take over with a veto proof majority and clean house and get this country back to where it should be!

NEWS BULLENTIN FOR HILLARY SUPPORTERS !!!!!

This is the best choice for you guys because if Barack wins and wins again in 2012 Joe Biden willl be 76 yrs old and will mostlikely not run for president at that age giving Hillary a clear shot at 68yrs old which is younger than McCain. !!!!

walterb   August 18th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Hey Erin…Go ahead and write in Hillary for President. You'll just get McCain you fool.

Biden is a good choice for VP. Also, I agree with Abby, after watching the forum (before even knowing that McCain had been late) I wondered if he had overheard Obama. Especially when he did not even think about his answer and yelled General Petraeus. Also, when discussing abortions he wanted to talk about the judges. I feel he and his advisors cheated. Wouldn't that be a surprise!

This guy seems to know allot and even thought about supporting him but I almost thought that he was kind of a racist. I

I like Biden. I hope he chooses him as the VP. Good sharp personality contrast between Obama and Biden. Yet same basic ideals. Should strike the right balance.

Senator Biden won't appease the Hillary supporters and Delaware was already in the Democratic column so not a lot would be gained from this pick. Good man though. Anxious to see who the Dems do choose and then who the Repubs check-mate with. Getting down to the nitty-gritty.

Someone has to make BO look capable.

Hillary has way more foreign war experience. she brokered peace treaties and made countires sign terms of surrender. She has served the nation on the battlefronts and survive Yugolavia. She is the Winston Churchill and Mikail Gorbachev of our era…

JAMES   August 18th, 2008 10:44 am ET

My pick for Obama's VP would be Mr Richardson from New Mexico. I really think this would be his best choice. We (Democrats) have got to ensure a win in November (We won in 2000 and 2004). We must figure out where the Republicans are going to cheat this time around and try to stop them.

Tere   August 18th, 2008 10:44 am ET

If anyone thinks that Hillary has a snowballs chance in November to win the presidential election, I think you'll be sadly disappointed.

There is no way that she'll win the general election…there are just too many strong emotions people have AGAINST her.

If folks want this country to remain on the same track as in the last 8 years…then so be it.
