McCain Gets Tough Questions in Colorado
Laura Meckler reports from Aspen, Colo., on the presidential race:
Sen. John McCain usually enjoys hostile questions from the audience, though he appeared slightly irked by a man today who accused him of flip-flopping and suggested that McCain had labeled Barack Obama a traitor for his position on Iraq.
The questions came at the Aspen Institute, a think tank that sponsors a string summer speakers. One of the first was from an Arizonan who said he had proudly voted for McCain for the Senate partly because he had spoken out against the “Christian right” and opposed “immoral and wrong” tax cuts during a time of war.
“I’m somewhat concerned that now you’ve flipped on some of those maverick positions,” he said.
He then posed his question: “When you came out and stated that you thought Barack Obama would rather lose a war to win an election–I heard that as you calling him a traitor. Because that’s what a member of the U.S. Senate who would feel that way actually would be,” he said. “Do you think Barack Obama is a traitor? Do you still believe that he really would rather lose a war in order to lose an election? If you do what makes you say that?”
McCain seized on the flip-flopper charge.
“What areas do you think I have changed my position?” he asked.
The questioner said he had “clearly changed” his position on the need for tax cuts at a time of war. While McCain opposes enactment of the Bush tax cuts, he now wants to make them permanent.
“I respectfully disagree,” he said, saying that he was for tax cuts at the time but ones that were targeted to the middle class and that were accompanied by spending cuts.
“I’m proud of my position on tax cuts,” he said.
He then asked if the questioner had another example to offer.
“My question was …” the man began.
“No, no. You said that I flip-flopped on a number of issues. I’d like to hear where that is.”
The man said his attitude on the “Christian right” had “changed somewhat in an effort to appeal to your base.”
McCain replied: “I believe in a very large Republican Party. We have to be inclusive.” He said he is proud that he reconciled with the late Jerry Falwell, who he had labeled and “agent of intolerance.”
“I’ll continue a life that I hope is characterized by both redemption, which I badly need, and reconciliation,” he said.
He then got around to answering the question about Obama’s position on Iraq. He began by saying that last summer he called for increased troops in Iraq because it was the right thing to do. He said that Obama had to decide what his position would be.
“And Sen. Obama said that … the surge wouldn’t work, that it would fail. He voted to cut off funding for the men and women serving in Iraq. He refuses to acknowledge that the surge is succeeding. He announced after not being there for 900 days, he announced his policy on Iraq before left.”
He concluded: “I think he’s wrong and I think he used the issue of Iraq for political reasons to get the nomination of his party. That’s my answer to you.”
McCain appeared ready to drag the America into a 3rd front the other day with his threatening Russia. Does America need someone who quick on the trigger of war right now? He has already embraced Bush on Iraq? Because of Stop loss some of our sons and daughters have already served 2 tours in the war zones. Many have now serving their 3rd or 4th tours. We have children now who half of their lives have known nothing but war and in two years will be asked to serve somewhere in a war zone in this world perhaps in Afghanistan, or Iraq and now perhaps fighting Russia. Peace has become a distance memory.
Already China has move ahead of the America in Manufacturing. After a 30 year program on energy savings Germany is in a better position to face the future then we are. Special interests like the Oil company executives need their profits in their lifetime at the expense of America’s future.
It not too late for America. Its not to late to save the future for our children. Thats why I’m voting for Obama.
Bobby stop smoking so much mary jane, it’s bad for your health.
Where did Mccain threathen Russia. I want you to reference the speech where he threathened Russia.
What the senator said is that Russia’s behavior needs to be dealt with by kicking them out of the G-8 and not give them WTO membership. You make it sound like he said to nuke them or something. Oh by the way Bobby Germany has been wipped by Russia. Germany and France (surprise!!! Not) have stopped Ukraine, Georgia’s membership to NATO because Russia owns them on energy and asked for a no vote. They get their gas from Russia. The news I’m getting is that Germany is reavaluating their energy arragement. I see a future with a Germany with a lot of nuclear plants.

These are not honest answers. He’s going to have to be able to justify his sell out status in a better way than that, to brush it off is very disrespectful to his potential voters who have legitimate concerns about him.
The answer is that he’s racist. Of course he won’t say that out loud, just behind closed doors. Things will change Nov. 4
Mikhail Gorbachev is “beyond comprehension”.
This Gorby isn’t like the old one–good-bye peristroika and glasnost.
Gorbachev lives in the old world, but we live in the new world–and we’re not going back.
It’s the New Way or the highway.
God bless America and God bless the civilization of the American peoples–solid as a rock.
With all my respect to the audience I need to say that you can not call me a racist because there are only two things that I hate in this life the most - racism and people of another race than caucasian (that is different)!
Sadly I do agree with Sen. McCain that Sen. Obama used the Iraq War as a political issue in this campaign. I wish that I could come to a different conclusion, but unfortunately I can’t do that honestly.
McCain is not a racist. In contrast, with the black vote well in hand, Obama plays the race card to reap the sympathy of white liberals. The Empty Suit will give preferential treatment to blacks and other minorities if elected to the White House. Count on a more deeply divided America under a liberal Democratic administration.
If you like Bush you will love hotheaded, trigger-happy Gramps McCain. You want cowboy diplomacy on steroids? McCain’s your man. For those of us not currently gnawing on raw flesh, let’s hope cooler heads prevail this November.
War is never the answer and is always wrong. The way to stop wars is to stop fighting them. McCain the war criminal should be back in prison, not running for President.
Jackson Browne sues McCain, RNC over song in ad
Aug. 15, 2008, 12:37 AM EST
Jackson Browne doesn’t want John McCain running on anything fueled by his lyrics.
The singer-songwriter sued McCain and the Ohio and national Republican committees in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Thursday, accusing them of using his song “Running on Empty” without his permission.
The lawsuit claims the song’s use was an infringement of his copyright and will lead people to conclude he endorses McCain. The suit says Browne is a lifelong liberal who is as well-known for his music as for being “an advocate for social and environmental justice.”
There is not one war in the history of our nation that was justified.
This election mirrors the gubernatorial election in Louisiana in 1991. At that time, Edwin Edwards ran against David Duke. Edwards ran as a Democrat. Duke ran as a Republican.
===
Duke is also a racist and a former member of the Ku Klux Klan. For decades, he attended a separatist church preaching White empowerment.
===
Duke was so disgusting that most Republicans actually supported Edwards. Both Republicans and Democrats united to defeat Duke.
===
The equivalent of Duke is Barack Hussein Obama. Obama is a racist and a Black-power advocate. For decades, he attended a separatist church preaching Black empowerment.
===
Many Democrats, like Joseph Lieberman, actually support McCain. Both Republicans and Democrats must unite to defeat the Black-empowerment racist — Barack Hussein Obama.
ArtinR: You sir,are truly an Idiot!
Tough tough tough tough McCain
McCain will never use
ISSUE OF IRAQ FOR POLITICAL REASONS TO GET ELECTED
(thought that was McCain’s strongest issue)
tell it like it is…. just what i was thinking
Where is the America that proudly stands united in representing and leading the world representing the democratic virtues of our founding fathers and the economic tenets of open and free markets unhindered by government interference ? An America where the political debate is so wrapped up in religious issues, social welfare programs and platforms of social justice based on tweeking the tax code ( which needs simplification more than anything) is a lost one….
Obama’s handling of the Georgia issue is laughable at best - someone obviously had to be found to brief him on the country, its location and strategic importance….. and then his initial comments that both parites should refrain from further actions ( until he got the full briefing) was written for the comedy channel….
Please we can do better -
McCain for 1 term and let’s move on
McCains comments amount to asking for a third war front and that we do not need.We are spread to thin as it is Georgia’s move one their neighbor seems afully convient for McCains camp.I would hope that this was not an orchastated event where hundreds wer hurt and killed to help the McCain camp gaign and advantage
Mr. McCain will need to be rather more specific than he has been in those answers. I fear that he has incipient dementia. I guess the debates will reveal the true characters.
What is that WSJ story today on page 3 about McCain’s son Andy as director of a failing bank. Shades of Keating Five.
There is a certain lack of honesty in McCain’s answers tot he questioner. The questioner could have asked “Did McCain really leave his crippled wife for Cindy? Did he really commit adultery?”
McCain was acting very arrogant in his comments about Georgia. McCain acted like he was already President.
Next he is sending the Lieberman and Graham abroad, once again acting like he is already President.
McCain stood with Bush from the beginning, telling lies about evidence for the war. McCain said it would be a short war that would not cost very much.
Europe needs to be active in the efforts to stop the Russians.
McCain makes Bush look good, never thought that was possible.
Georgian leaders may be blaming Russia for the conflict raging in South Ossetia, but former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev said Thursday “there is no doubt” that Georgia provoked the clash.
Mikhail Gorbachev told CNN’s Larry King that Russia called extra troops into Georgia to stem violence.
Gorbachev told CNN’s Larry King that Russia moved additional forces into South Ossetia in response to “devastation” in the South Ossetia city of Tskhinvali.
“This was the use of sophisticated weapons against a small town, against a sleeping people. This was a barbaric assault,” said Gorbachev, the last president of the former Soviet Union.
So what positions do Senators Liberman and Graham hold in “President McCain’s cabinet”
Who is the presumptuos candidate? McCain already has sent his own “Secretary of State and Srcretary of Defense” to Georgia.
.
Those “three senators” are amazing in their insensitive stupidity. They are treating the Secretary of State in an apalling manner.
Condoleeza Rice must feel a bit upstaged
Bush is a lame duck, but he is still the President.
Crazy stuff!
Let’s not forget McCrazy’s flip-flop on MLK holiday. He says I used to be a racist, now I am for the holiday. Once a racist, always a racist.
BOTH CANDIDATES MIGHT DO WELL TO LISTEN TO ANDREW BACEVICH.
Only rarely does someone surface with qualifications as well as insights and a delivery that stimulate thinking. Even more rarely does an individual stimulate the very personal mental articulation of self observation.

Bacevich deserves as broad an audience as can be exposed to his thoughtful analysis.
