With Georgia, Russia at war, where's Condoleezza Rice?

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili hold press conference after their talks in Tblisi July 2008

Russia is pounding Georgia, a small democratic country that depends on the United States for moral support.

The president of the United States, who once famously peered into Russian dictator-in-the-making Vladimir Putin's soul and proclaimed him "very straightforward and trustworthy," is making statements from the White House.

The presidential candidates -- Democrat Barack Obama , from his vacation in Hawaii; and Republican John McCain ,from the campaign trail in Pennsylvania, call for a multi-prong, diplomatic effort to force Moscow to withdraw. Even the United Nations has held meetings of the Security Council.

But Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a former Stanford professor specializing on the Soviet Union, is oddly absent from public view.

On vacation, she has made more than 90 calls over the last three days to Russian, Georgian and European leaders, the State Department says. But McCain, in his statement, called for Rice to do more.

The secretary of State should begin high-level diplomacy, including visiting Europe, to establish a common Euro-Atlantic position aimed at ending the war and supporting the independence of Georgia. With the same aim, the U.S. should coordinate with our partners in Germany, France, and Britain, to seek an emergency meeting of the G-7 foreign ministers to discuss the current crisis.

Rice went to Tbilisi, Georgia, in July, trying to calm the situation, seen here with President Mikheil Saakashvili at a press conference after their talks. Publicly, she talked about Georgia's "territorial integrity." State Department officials said she privately warned the Georgians not to provoke Russia.

But critics told the Wall Street Journal that Rice may not have responded quickly to Russia's muscle-flexing on Georgia's border because she has been focused elsewhere -- preoccupied with Iraq, Iran and the Arab-Israeli conflict -- and delegated the Soviet account to more junior officials.

The Bush Admin never tried to calm the situation.

Truth be known, the Bushies were glad at tweaking the Russian bear prior to the US elections. Bush etal hoped that some kind of dramatic action in Georgia would prevent catastrophic Republican electorial loses.

However, as with much else this mis-administration has attempted, the Bush plans have turned simple failure into pure disaster.

How much longer must the US suffer at the hands of this idiot?

I'm curious why there has been no mention of where she was vacationing (let alone why it takes everyone four days to respond in this administration). Given the heat Obama got for his "elite" Hawaiian vacation, I'd like to know if Condi was in Branson or Orlando with the regular Americans.

From backwater to belligerent.
Georgia on the post-modern stage finally.
Will it be the genius of Balanchine (nee Balanchivadze) or treachery of Stalin (nee Dzhugashvili).

For, almost eight years the Bush administration has failed to show any maturity in handling any conflict. Most Americans figure how to de-escalate issues by the time they are 30, but some how Bush has managed to reach 60 without any of these skills. I can't not think of one time where an administration was so quick to box themselves in with escalating rhetoric. Quick to take a political position, he gives away the leverage of statesmanship and authority. It's like an old record now, he will never be known as a statesman, and America has a long way to go to recover.

Marty for some reason you seem to think that because Bush isn't shoving his face in front of a camera espousing diplomatic rhetoric that he is failing in his foreign policy. I prefer a person who gets stuff done quietly rather than someone who opens his mouth without thinking (Hussein Obama) and makes statements like It was "important ... for all sides to show restraint. Yeah they should just put down their guns and give each other hugs! Get real!!

ms rice has absolutly no right to speak of the sovereignty of georgia when she herself decided that serbia was not sovereign in kosovo.....hippocrits all

We kill one millions souls in Iraq, then we cry foul when the Soviets kill hundreds. The hipocracy. Continue killing by the military comlex of both countries is the trend for the new century. Get used to it.

George-

"Opens his mouth without thinking?" Hmmm, let's see...

"Bring 'em On!"
"Wanted, dead or alive!"
"Heck of a job, Brownie!"
"If I find that anyone in my administration had anything to do (with outing a covert agent, ie: Valerie Plame) they will no longer work in my administration."
"Combat missions in Iraq are now over;" or commonly referred to as "Mission Accomplished"
"We have evidence that Saddam Hussein has acquired Yellow Cake from Niger capable of making nuclear weapons."
"Iraq had ties to al Qaeda who was behind the 9-11 attacks."
"We do not torture."
"The Constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper!"
"I, George W. Bush, do solemny swear to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America." January, 2000...

Opens his mouth without thinking?
These are just the top ten; as we know, there is so, so, so,soooooooooo much more. But you just keep living in the Poppy Fields George; ignorance is indeed bliss.

Ron,
What in the heck does where she was "vacationing" have to do with anything? Are you so grasping for straws to criticize that you want to "expose" her for taking a break somewhere that you don't approve of? I am sure that most Americans who try and go away for a couple of days don't have to make 90 phone calls dealing with issues of this magnitude. Stop being so petty - maybe you need a vacation to Branson or Orlando to come up with a real issue to discuss.

This is more complicated than most of us know. If we escalate our efforts in Georgia, then we look like an aggressor. When we launch our humanitarian effort to aid Georgia, who's to say that a mistake will not be made by the Russians who misinterperate our intensions in the region, and boom start another war the US has to fight in.

Condolezza I'm sure is thinking "Great I wish I were still at Stanford".

Whether we like it or not, we are at war in the world, and it is not going to end any time soon.

We cannot just withdraw from Afghanistan or Iraq without the rest of the world thinking we lost our nerve, and we certainly cannot afford another war. Things are getting so bad here financially, that soon we will need humanitarian aid.

I'm praying to God that bush will start acting like the lame duck that he is befor he gets us into another war. North Korea, Iran, Russia....Who's next???

She is playing piano in a room with an open window and a fresh breeze blowing from the ocean. Well, Russia has got a lot of momentum. I don't think US administration can do something to prevent Putin to achieve his goals. Look realisticaly, you invaded Afghanistan and Iraq without UN consent, you broke international law in Serbia big time and have been the main culprit in exporting your "democracy" throughout the World, so your moral credits are profoundly exhausted. Other thing, your troops in the middle East are at Russian missile reach, so your manoeuvre space is limited like your moral credits. You don't posses any leverage against Russia, your economy is in a deep shit; on the contrary Russia has everything that you need (resources, political influence over Iran, leverage agains Israel ...). So, my freinds you are doomed and bipolar World is about to emerge again which we all should embrace for peace, ballance and prosperity.

we all can rant on this one, but please read what unbiased analysts think about the whole fuss around Georgia.

The beginning of this article describes Georgia as democratic. That's not the case. Saakashvili has locked up the opposition and shut down the free press.

Remember how the plane "crashed into the pentagon"? how come the video of said event has never been released? Why was it neccessary for the FBI to confiscate all the tapes within minutes of the event? I'll tell you why, so that George Bush can do or say whatever he wants under the pretence of 9-11 including, the ILLEGAL invasions of afghanistan, iraq and soon-to-be iran and (probably) Venezueala in the near future. America deserves a kick in the teeth and the EU and asia are the one's to give it to them,

Does the media NOT acknowledge the blatant hypocrisy of the Bush Administration telling another country what they ought and ought not do in terms of military "adventures"? Once Bush and his PNAC cronies decided that "pre-emptive war" is an acceptable reason to launch a military assault, they forfeited any moral grounds to protest what Russia is doing in Georgia. Once the Bush Administration made it clear that International Law has no bearing on U.S. policy, they lost the right to appeal to International Law to reprimand other nations who behave recklessly. What moron would not understand this point?

This is one of the few times I think that Bush has handeled the situation well. How is Bush suppose to stop Russia from attacking Georgia I mean come on.
Liberals just want to blame Bush for everything. If it rains to hard its Bush's fault. I am not in support of they way bush has handeled everything but he is not evil (like Putin). I think it is amazing how much people in America support russia i think it is not that they support russia it is that because bush supports Georgia liberals will support russia.

There is more than one bad guy. Look up PNAC, US weapons deals. US military bases set up in most of that region that surround Iran. We are trying to set up in the Russian region. We supplied weapons to Georgia. Our regulated media does not disclose much of our actions. I am ashamed of our leader Bush. Our kids join military for a false cause, their bodies are dispensible while the rich greedy corporate politicians get rich. Please research the truth.
