Obama took a break from his week-long vacation to weigh in on the Georgian crisis.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (CNN) — How do you spend your time in a state famous for its sunny tropical skies? You spend your afternoon in a movie theater.

Sen. Barack Obama did just that Monday afternoon, taking in a matinee of the latest Batman sequel, 'The Dark Knight' — and giving him an opportunity to assess the acting ability of campaign supporter and Democratic Senate colleague Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who makes a cameo appearance in the blockbuster film.

Watch: Obama arrives in Hawaii for weeklong vacation

Post-movie, Obama went for a 4-star meal for the second time this week: Monday night it was 'Mariposa' at the Honolulu Neiman Marcus. The restaurant's Web site promises exceptional Hawa'in cuisine served on an open air lanai, situated to catch the island's legendary sunsets.

Activities for the Hawai'ian-born presumptive Democratic nominee so far have included a jog along the beach, a round of golf, and a carbeque along the North Shore, which is known for its killer surfing. Obama has also made several visits to his grandmother, who has lived in Honolulu for 50 years and who he affectionately calls his 'Tùtù.'

I have follow this election closely . When Hillary was on the lead You make her campaign picture nice and bright while Obama looks rusty. Also Obama was always in the second conversation. I was looking at up coming clip about Obama and McCain CNN you show McCain looking up while looking down and sad. I'm sure you have better pictures than that. Until Obama showed CNN how tough he can get and people start complaining about your you change the coverage. I looking at CNN and listening to your news coverage all I see is they are soft on McCain and never bring any of his mistakes out. You concentrate so much on Obama even you know the type stitches he has on his shirt. Why can't you leave him alone to enjoy with his family. CNN are afraid to say anything about McCain because he was a veteran and prisoner of war? Instead of talking about where Obama eat why not talk about how elite McCain and his family is. You can you self most trusted news I don't I doubt that. I know you may not post my comment but I have to write about your bias.

matt   August 12th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Looks like his kids piano lessons are going to have to take a back seat to fine dining and golf. To bad i hear they had so much promise. Did he clear his spending with Michele? I know their budget is tight so I hope so. Is there any wonder this ego maniac liars eyes are brown?

DR. YES   August 12th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

DR. YES   August 12th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

karen   August 12th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Isnt it refreshing to see Barack and his family enjoying a vacation without the media in his face. Thank God we have a candidate of his stature and intelligence.

Marilyn   August 12th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Who cares?????? CNN, you have gotten as bad as the National Enquirer!

Otis   August 12th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

And then Obama retired to his residence, complete with air conditioning and wrap around lanai and he was sitting there pondering a deep thought. Perhaps it was a thought about what he should be doing tomorrow or comments he would write to CNN thanking them for reporting all the mundane events that he's been up to while he's been in Hawaii.

I think I can write for CNN, no?

The Bush Twins : George and John   August 12th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

The media just won't leave the man alone for five minutes. And then a bunch of ppl posting here are going to blame Sen. Obama because of the attention he gets. Of course McBush is just too boring for anyone to go follow him around, I mean how much news can you make out of some old geezer taking his daily dose of Geritol ?

bert   August 12th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Obama is right, we need to solve the energy crisis, fix this economy, stop the war in Iraq and regain the respect we lost abroad. We do not need to be distacted in Iraq because when real stuff happens, like this Russia and Georgia thing, we don't have as loud a voice as we're accustomed to having. Our government needs to work on these things so that our currency will right itself in contrast to other monies in the world. Message to Obama: Win this election and start fixing this mess!

Tony   August 12th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Something else younger than McCain. GOD!

Obama 08

Michele, Oregon   August 12th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

You know, the more I see of some of the articles on these tickers, I am wondering about the subtle underhandedness against Obama the candidate. It APPEARS the exact opposite to those who don't like the Senator, but EVEN after the ticker that states that we have "seen too much of Obama", you continue to offer the unsubstantive stuff.

Keep feeding into the negativity CNN. You are more culpable than FOX who is overtly who they are. CNN, the more Clintonite-ish News Network. Go for some real, investigative questions and get over the ridiculous talking points of what ads are working, etc.. Go for the real stuff. Get back to your roots!!!! And while you're at it, let Obama have a vacation. In truth, he has made more money for news stations than anyone in recent history because he IS just so remarkable.

CONSERVATIVE VOTER   August 12th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Mc Cain has 26yrs of EXPERIENCE, yet HE LACKED JUDGEMENT and VOTED FOR A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN WAGED. He is a CERTIFIED WARMONGER and if he is President , we would ALWAYS BE FIGHTING. THINK ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN. HE HAS THE BLOOD OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS AND IRAQ CITIZEN ON HIS GRUBBY HANDS.

Anna, Laguna Beach, CA   August 12th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Hawaii is his home. Why wouldn't he go to the movies, he's not a tourist. I live 10 minutes from the beach and I NEVER go, especially on sunny days, are you kidding. You wouldn't be able to park.

Michigan 500   August 12th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Could CNN please investigate how McCain who is supported and advised by the same people who supported Bush is going to be any less disastrous than Bush's administration? Even McCain says we are worse off now than we were four years ago and he's got the same cast of charachters working for him? Helllooooo!

Sue   August 12th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Can ya just leave the man alone for a little while?
He deserves to go see his family and not be hounded by reporters, give it a break, OK?

Ohhhh, I remember now. McWar is too boring to follow around, his schedule includes many MANY naps in between his constant gaffes that his staff try their best to prevent…

OBAMA '08-'12

Lisa, NY   August 12th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

The media is not stupid. They know where their bread and butter is, and right now he's in Hawaii. If they thought John McCain would create more money for their ads, and enable them to produce more news shows, they would be WITH John McCain.

Wake up, his supporters don't care what movie he went to see. This is all driven by CNN for revenue.

BlameBarack   August 12th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Russia is behaving the same way America did against Iraq. John McCain is a hyprocrit because he thought it was ok to invade Iraq because of America's interest but is now saying Russia is not allowed to do the same for what they believe is in their best interest. That is why Russia hates America-because America has a 'Do as I say, Not as I do' policy. Pathetic.

Tony Z-MD   August 12th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

The man takes a vacation and get criticized. It's amazing how folks hide behind their screen name and post incorrect facts. All I can say is McCain 2000 would be ashamed of McCain 2008.

Geri   August 12th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Who cares what Obama is doing on vacation. Just another photo op for them. I thought the trip was to spend time with his kids not make this a political vacation. He already did that overseas and it didn't help much. We need issues and facts on more than his life. Did he take any of his crook cronies with him?? Also if he was going to spend family time…why take friens along. Kids too boring??? He's such a joke .

Nowhere Man   August 12th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

I can understand how he's so exhausted after spending all of those 143 days actually working in the Senate chambers since getting elected over 3 1/2 years ago. Anybody else on this site work only 143 days on their real job the past 3 1/2 years? And got paid for the rest of that time off?

Let the American people see Mccain for all his mistakes. Leave Obama alone while he is spending time with his family much need time.

J, Philly PA   August 12th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

I thought CNN was fully aware that the American public is tired of hearing about Obama and yet…? He's on vacation! Leave him alone!

anonymous   August 12th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

You know the news media really gets people all fired up and they really need to stop. Obama has a right to his privacy with his family and do as he pleases. This is a right I believe being an american has. I do not think it is necessary to probe into every person running for office personal life. Let this man enjoy HIS TIME. I am not a democrat either. I believe in what is right. Further more the news media should maybe probe into their own life and let us know what they are doing if that is the way it goes. Tit for tat.

Erika, KS   August 12th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Another typical Congress member. I long for the day when the American people get what elected Congressional members get. You know what I'm saying. Better health insurance. A month long vacation. These political hacks are out for themselves. They care nothing about how the rest of us live. When do I get my month long vacation? Why don't you just stay in Hawaii, Obama? You don't do anything anyway. Talk, talk, talk but says nothing.

RealityKing   August 12th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

McCain is warning of Russian imperialism…, while Obama vacations in Hawaii. How fitting..

Will Obama even answer that call at 3:00 AM??

Cheri   August 12th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Donna   August 12th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

The DNC is Corrupted   August 12th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

I have to respond here as the other article is cut off.

For those of you saying Hillary is not following the rules of the DNC, GET OVER IT. Neither Obama or Hillary won the number of delegates to win the nomination — NEITHER of them! The DNC will decide who they want and they wanted Obama since the beginning. We have every right to be angry about this.

And for those of you saying Hillary is destroying the party. Obama destroyed the party, not Hillary. So you GET OVER IT. If Hillary isn't on the ticket the party does not deserve our respect or our vote. You can blame this on Pelosi, Dean, and the traitor Richardson (who didn't even cast his vote to reflect the will of the people of his state).

The dem's rules for obtaining a nominee need to be seriously looked at as they are flawed. They do not correlate to the republican process or the GE - which is why the dems almost always lose the White House. It's fact, people.

Curly   August 12th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

What will Obama's 'mindless fans' do while he is on vaction? There minds must be a blank slate by now without Obama to plant any thoughts there.

People with a functioning brain know Hilliary is the only one ready to lead this nation and beat McBush.

Cathy   August 12th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I'm sick of Obama being criticized for anything he does or doesn't do.

When Obama FIRST came on the scene people said he was to boring and only talked about issues. NOW people are saying that Obama only gives empty speeches. But the same people that say they don't know who Obama is are saying they’ve seen him to much in the media. You almost have to be deaf, blind and unconscious not to know how Obama stands on important issues. Just watch the news and read the newspaper or internet and you will see. Also, Obama decides to takes a little vacation to spend some quality time with his family and people say it's bad timing. Further, one minute he is too black…the next minute he's not black enough. Obama is right…you can't please everyone any of the time. So Obama…do what you do because you have shown excellent integrity throughout your campaign!!!!

Obama has run an excellent campaign ESPECIALLY compared to the "experienced" politician like McCain and Clinton. AND NOT EVEN THE WORST CONSERVATIVE CRITICS CAN DENY THIS FACT!!!!!

OW   August 12th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

So now the McCain morons are complaining because Obama was born in an interesting place. I'm from New York. I guess this makes me an elitist too.

Veteran for Obama   August 12th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

why don't you report what McCain does every weekend he takes off for vactaion? Why only cover Obama. Give McCain some of this crap you love to report on.

Obama supporter:White, 60 year old woman   August 12th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Rose: Why would Obama want to subject his ailing and beloved grandmother to the nastiness of people like you? His half sister is active in his campaign and I am sure Obama is spending lots of time with his daughters as well as giving them time to spend with their other relatives. They are just doing it out of the eyes again of bitter, unhappy people like yourself.

Again, the Obama haters blame Obama for the media coverage that the MEDIA decides to publish. Obama supporters want there to be more press coverage of the "wedded to the past" McCain who stumbles and obsesses about Obama constantly.

The increase in income that will result from the tax relief on low and moderate income persons, make sure to tell you employers to keep the money because you would rather them have it because you are still bitter over Hillary or McCain. Also, if you have family members in Iraq, please let them know you wanted them to remain there at least another hundred years under the McCain administration. Let all your friends and family that are in the military know that you would rather them go to war and lose their lives even if the intelligence reports recommend otherwise.

It's been easy for Obama during the primaries to criticize Hillary's voting record, Mr. 191 Times Voted 'Present' in his State Legislator. He knew that would further polarize the divide between the Hillary Haters and those who know EXPERIENCE when we see it.

Now he's using the same ole tact on McCain. NEWS FLASH TO SENATOR OBAMA - It didn't work before and it won't work now. See it's easy to criticize others when you don't have a record to speak of. It's easier to criticze others period. What EXPERIENCE affords you to do is not only learn the word 'Humili te' as one learns but more invaluable to America, it affords you the ability to 'Talk the Walk'.

An agressive Russia invading a democracy and he is on holiday. Hurm I guess Obama and Bush have more in common than I thought————————————————————————————————

What exactly, according to you and given your expertise, should Senator Obama do at this present time in the Russia-Georgia conflict? As a presidential nominee and Senator, he would not be in a position to make nor take any diplomatic policy stance as would or before the President of the United States or the Secretary of State. There is a chance that Russia will veto any action taken by the UN and Georgia isn’t a member of NATO as of yet.

Stop blowing hot air.

This is nonsense, I dont care what he eats, what movie he saw, or any of that, basically he done what any of us would do, provided we have the time and money to do it, if the media had anything constructive to report they would say Obama is on a short vacation and leave it at that, but they are part of the problem , we he comes back from vacation, they can monitor his every move, including how many brush strokes he used when he was brushing his teeth…this is pathetic.

He's on vacation, and they still report on every one of his activities. McCain is on the campaign trail, and they only say "He's in York, Pennsylvania"

Way to be unbiased, Media Conglomerates

Matt   August 12th, 2008 11:46 am ET

More proof that Obama doesn't even need to campaign.

The media will do it for him.

And half the country is too uneducated to know otherwise.

Is this news?
McCain is right about the Obama being celibrity, media has made him a celebrity and less a candidate.

INSANE IN THE MCCAIN   August 12th, 2008 11:45 am ET

McCain Supporters,
He is not a maverick, but rather a flip-flopper.
Below are only a few position McSurge has changed positions on:
1. McCain opposed off-shore oil drilling; now he supports it
2. McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
3. McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
4. McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)
5. McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
6. McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
7. McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
8. In 2002 McCain said, it is OK for Bush to detain suspected enemy combatants in Guantanamo bay, without bringing any charge against them. In now (2007) he is against it, and even wants to closedown Guantanamo bay.
9. In 2006, McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy.
In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
10. We can’t have a time-time for Iraq, and It’s OK to stay in Iraq for 100 years;
……….. 4 months later McCain appear agrees to an18-month time-table for a withdrawal
McCain is no straight-talker….so…If you support McCain…. could you tell him to rename his bus/plane….. the FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS ?
By keeping “straight talk express” on his bus & plane, McCain is insulting the intelligence of every American. Even a dummy, can easily tell McCain is the king of Flip-Floppers
……..FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS …. This is a better description of McCain, isn’t it ?

Voter   August 12th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Uh, oh, Barry. You're not in Kansas anymore!

The mess in Georgia is REAL. Time to stop pretending to be President. Put way the pretend presidential seal, put away your scrapbook from traveling all over Europe pretending to be president.

Glad to see you're taking a lesson from the grown-up around here -John McCain.

Your tepid and empty headed response to the Russian takeover of Georgia is the NEW politics, I guess. Then you read McCain's response and said, "Oh, now I get it."

Now your "position du jour" looks almost like his.

Too bad that in the real world, you won't get any second takes. You make McCain look like a true, EXPERIENCED statesman!

Go home, Barry, and grow up.

Franky   August 12th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Didn't you guys run a story/poll that indicated that people knew TOO MUCH about Obama? Seriously CNN, can you report on more things of INTEREST????

liz   August 12th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Leave the poor man alone, he gets one week off in the middle of all this craziness and you feel the need to report his every move?

How about you start doing that while the current president takes his MONTHS of vacation every year…

Anonymous   August 12th, 2008 11:43 am ET

So he went jogging, went to a movie, ate dinner, played golf, and went to a "carbeque."

McCain is taunting the Russians and there is news of a cease fire. Can we stick with what is most important?

Barack4Americain08   August 12th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I didn't even realize his grandmother was still alive and I am an avid Obama supporter and political junkie to boot. He's got to do a better job of displaying his "American" (read cynically as: "white") to those "downscale" and "older" voters. Don't know what her health is right now, but, uh….we should see some pictures from his vacation (and they better include many pictures of him and "Tutu")

CNN, the offical Vote for McCain Network.

Can Obama take some time off without have his every move tracted.

"Post-movie, Obama went for a 4-star meal for the second time this week: Monday night it was 'Mariposa' at the Honolulu Neiman Marcus." …I guess CNN is working with McCain to paint Obama out to be an elitest.

I never saw CNN talking abot McCain's $500 shoes or the 8 mansions that he and Cindy have. I'm sure John and Cindy eat "4 star" measl every night.

I'm sure CNN will tell us all abotu McCain's vaction next week at his HUGE ranch in Arizona. Probably not because the reporters will be to busy drinking and eating barbeque with McCain.

wow, why do they have to follow him so much. can't the man take a break??? it's the MSM that have built his celebrity status. He is amazing to be sure… and hey hillary supporters… working with underpriveledged familes in the south-side of chicago not only shows experience in working with people (MUCH needed to be POTUS) but this also shows a great sense of compation. he could have gone the "american way" and made his millions being a prominant lawyer, but no. he chose the role of nobility in working with everyday people. getting in the trenches only to just pay off student loans and by no means should EVER be labeled an elitist!!!!! let's ask Hillary if 109 million dollars is being in the trenches of our failing economy? hell, mccain for that matter fits HRC's bill. They'd prolly have a good time together on Rodeo Drive. They could afford it!!!!

Obama can take permanent holiday in Hawaii and let the true winner of the democratic party nomination taker her place at the convention. He can stay and enjoy the sun and surf and let Clinton take her rightful role as the nominee as she had the popular vote.

I hope Obama has no skeletons in the closet like Edwards because if and when they do get out, the democrats are dead seeing that the DNC chose to select him over the righful winner who is Hillary Clinton. I know for sure the republicans will have a good laugh all the way to the White House in November.

therealist   August 12th, 2008 11:34 am ET

I sure wish I could afford to go to Hawaii, spend afternoons at movie theaters and evenings at 4 star resturants. If only I didn't have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet…

I wonder when Barack Obama is going to come back to Washington and do some of the people's work? Aren't we like in an energy crisis??

Obama-Junkie, IL   August 12th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Obama…let it go. Don't feel that you have to publicly comment on the Georgia/Russia conflict.

Speaking about the conflict while palm trees are in the background is not an effective way to beat back the "celebrity" and "elitist" charge the Republicans are and will keep throwing at you.

Tim   August 12th, 2008 11:16 am ET

The 4 star restaurant thing is playing into the media trying to find something 'elitist' about his trip. This is completely absurd, Obama is not wealthy so he has to vacation in the public while McCain who calls Obama an elitist can just retreat to one of his many houses or his ranch. Furthermore Hawaii is not exactly an exotic location for Obama when you consider that it is where he grew up and where relatives live now.

Richard   August 12th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Thank god this jerk was kicked out of the Clinton campaign. Talk about politics of the past! Here is an example we can hope to leave behind after this election. This is why I had given up on the Democratic party until Obama came along.

I wish I were there too, looks nice. But somehow, some one will come on this blog spouting something ignorant about his life, his vacation or him as a person, even though all the article is about is his freaking vacation and what he's done.

oh btw to the idiots on this blog who keep saying he's unAmerican and has produced his Birth Certificate? Actually, a copy of it is online. And don't you think BEFORE you run for President, they verify these things? Or are you just a total moron and voted for Bush TWICE? I guess fool can get fooled again. (That's part of a quote from your esteemed President Bush).

Yes We CAN!   August 12th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Hey CNN- why are you "reporting" on Barack's dinner at a nice restaurant, but you say nothing about the fact that McCain has nine homes with his heiress second wife and wears 500 dollar shoes?

We're not going to let you guys in the media give McBush a free ride- the truth will always come out.

Obama takes more vacations than any other candidate! What does this mean if he becomes president? At least this one, he took in America! I guess those campaign dollars are coming in very nicely. Too bad we lost all of our good choices during the primaries.

I like Obama… stop treating him like a celecbrity media or you're going to hand the nomination to the GOP?

If you "must" report on this frivilous stuff… can you tell us what McCain at the sae exact moment?
