HP Pavilion Slimline s3500f

HP Pavilion Slimline s3500f PC
Full Set Keyboard Optical Drive

REVIEW

The HP Pavilion Slimline s3500f ($580 direct) is HP's customizable version of the Slimline PC configuration we've seen before in the Slimline s3330f. It uses the same case, but the s3500f is a little more than half the price of its predecessor. Obviously the new system has fewer bells and whistles, but then again, you don't always need all the optional extras to get a useful PC, especially for the midrange user or student.

Bottom Line

The HP Pavilion Slimline s3500f is small in stature, but larger than the competing Dell Studio Hybrid and Mac mini. It trades a bit of the other's compactness in return for a full-size hard drive and optical drive, as well as some internal expansion. Forward-looking with 4GB and 64-bit Vista, it's a good value choice for the high school or college-bound student.

Pros

Compact. Integrated power supply. Expandable. Pocket Media Drive Bay. 4GB of memory. Nice styling. Wireless networking.

Cons

Only a 60-day subscription to Internet security. Half-height PCIe x16 slot. 160W power supply. Some of today's programs can?t run on 64-bit Vista. Weak integrated graphics.
