Delicious 2.0 Launches. Really. It Totally Launched.
by Michael Arrington on July 31, 2008

YAY! The long awaited, much promised, never delivered Delicious 2.0 will launch in the next few minutes, just like they promised again last week.

The new Delicious is just like the old Delicious, except for the way it looks. They’re also promising that it will be “faster, easier to learn,” and “hopefully more desirable.”

Speed: We’ve moved to a new infrastructure that makes every page faster. This new platform will enable us to keep up with traffic growth while ensuring Delicious is responsive and reliable. You may not have noticed, but the old backend was getting creaky under the load of five million users.

Search: We’ve completely overhauled our search engine to make it faster and more powerful. Searches used to take ages to return results; now they’re very quick. The new search engine is also smarter, and more social: you can search within one of your tags, another public user’s bookmarks, or your social network. Now it’s easier to take advantage of the expertise and interests of your friends, not to mention the Delicious community at large.

Design: Finally, we’ve updated the user interface to improve usability and add a few often-requested features (such as selectable detail levels and alphabetical sorting of bookmarks). Our goal has been to keep the new design similar in spirit to the old one, so all of you veterans should be able to jump in without any confusion. At the same time, we’re hoping that newcomers to Delicious will find it easier to learn.

Users will need to log into their accounts and get a new browser cookie. Honestly, I rarely visit Delicious any more, the Firefox plugin is so good that actually visiting the site isn’t necessary. So all I’m really hoping for here is a stable service. If there are glitches, I hope they fix them quickly.

As I said in our previous posts, it’s too bad Delicious 2.0 couldn’t launch before founder Joshua Schachter left the company in frustration. I called Schachter to ask him what he has to say about the new launch. His response - “Good luck. I hope it goes well.”

It HAS frozen over!

Bravo…better late than never I suppose!

And why did they have to switch over to delicious.com? I much preferred del.icio.us

Bleh, the .com version is nicer, easier to remember, and doesn’t suffer the “look how cool we are” “too clever by half” syndrome.

Trying to get back regular visitors, the same kind that can’t remember the del.icio.us

I think that it should be a user preference…My preference would be del.icio.us

I’ve been using http://delicious.com for the past two years, it just redirects you. It’s not like this is any kind of improvement.

Cool news. Looking forward to see how this long awaited site is.

I never thought I’d read a TC post that started with “YAY!”

sometimes I like to mix things up a little.

shouldn’t that have been “YUM!” I know, I know, LAME but someone was going to have to say it eventually

Hmmm… not seeing it yet

The coming soon screen is still showing on delicious.com

Me neither :S

I’ve logged out and in again, but nothing..

Diigo still wins with full-text search, not just tags and titles.

“We’re in the middle of launching the new Delicious!
Please check back soon…”

Middle of launching…I guess some of the intertubes didn’t connect the way they should have. Too bad Ted Stevens is busy today.

Just logged out and back in - still the old delicious.

Hi everyone — The launch in in progress right now and you should start seeing the new site as DNS updates propagate…

I see it just fine.

It’s BEAUTIFUL.

I just had a nerdgasm.

I’m seeing it now but can’t log in due to a forbidden error.

I logged out, but when I try to login I get a URL forbidden error. Good thing I didn’t delete the copies of my bookmarks in firefox.

Oh gee willickers! What would I ever do without my bookmarks!

just tried to create an account and it leads to forbidden page on yahoo servers…

https://secure.delicious.com/register

Click on the “Sign in” link, forbidden…

Seeing it, but unable to log in or save any bookmarks using the FireFox plugin …. patience :)

Check that. It’s up and running for me now. Initial reaction: looks MUCH betterh.

…and I’m assuming the other news is that at some point Yahoo! bought the delicious.com domain from whoever had it last to rerelease de.icio.us on more familiar .com terroir?

I never checked what delicious.com was before but what’s the story behind that purchase? Must have been worth something hefty (npi) if it was a foody site.

The search results page is finally usable. I can read the number of people who have saved a page!!!

Seems broken to me:

Sorry, Forbidden.
You don’t have permission to access this URL on this server.

On several pages, including login.

Wait till you see FAV.ORIT.ES…

Delicious opinions and tech news hear… http://www.gothamtechminute.blogspot.com

got it.. :)
I like more the plain old version

I love all the sponsored results showing next to the results now

Looks like some good stuff on its way :)
Yahoo is doing something to mark its impact in a big way by overhauling its UIs.

I still can’t use my Yahoo! ID to login…I’m still gonna pass.

It works on http://delicious.com/ (notice the missing WWW)
The redesign is nothing special, it actually looks more messy then before (45° angles on images … welcome to the year 2000).
Also, very little AJAX on things, like the tabs on the homepage, where it would be usefull.

First, I don’t see tilted images (which I wouldn’t mind somehow). Also, I think they actually did usability tests from seeing the result. I believe only people who know what AJAX stands for care about it in this case. I had no trouble using the site, it’s fast, responsive, and usable.

funny thing this launch, like many here I find myself locked out. it worked so well for years of course i have forgotten both my password and username. and when i click on ‘forgotten your passwd’ i get that forbidden page. is this a sigh of information capitalism killing itself? does anybody know any good open source social bookmarking sites?

I don’t know many that’s going to give you a better memory. Sorry.

Two thumbs up from me. I avoided the last one, but the new one has me sold.

It works, as Bart mentioned, without the ‘www’. I think the design is functional…Delicious was never going to be the trendiest from a design-standpoint. We’ll see if this can boost its relevance back up again.

I love the service and the redesign is certainly an improvement, but it’s disappointing that this release doesn’t include any new functionality after waiting this long. I hope that now that they’re on a more stable system, that they start to innovate on features.

Same problem as armin - locked out with no password recovery option. Clicking on the link gives me the 403 forbidden error. Come on Yahoo…

Blocked for “accessing the site too rapidly” and getting an error when submitting a bug via the link they tell me to use.

Nice work.

Ugh, it sucks! Looks like Digg and all those other “candy-ass” sites, with “menus” and other GUI-like sickening crap. The simplicity of the original site was a major appeal to me. Add to this J’s recent departure, and I’m seriously doubting I want to keep my bookmarks there…

Backing up my links and looking around for a better service…

I just love the redesign - very web 2.0 and sleek. I was just checking out my old delicious account when I saw the downtime screen pop up.

WOW! I just keep staring at it! It’s such a clean design. I hardly ever use the site (thanks to the FF plugin), but will actually visit this site as it presents the information in such clean way. I the “top 10 tags” in the sidebar and the way the results make the TLD bold. Very cool!

why choose such a pale color for the titles? what am i a 6 year old with perfect eyesight? delicious is a tool not a fancy css site… it should be easy to work with and not eye candy. i hope they change the colors soon or they will lose me as their users.

Is it relevant at all that Yahoo! is not mentioned anywhere? Not even on the “about” page? Not even a discrete “A Yahoo! company” in the footer.

a fresh new interface…!

http://blabtech.blogspot.com

You’re not much of a “techdude” if you don’t know what a “Website” field is.

There are certainly a few design issues that need to be resolved but overall, the site looks fantastic! I am disappointed that there’s still NO WAY TO SORT TAGS BY POPULARITY… C’MON. The lack of this incredibly option is a joke at this point.

and in Iran Delicious has been filtered from several minutes ago!!

I must admit that I like the cleaner look as well. It works better with my already busy brain. At least they continue to update and strive to make better changes, in my opinion.

Website Content Tips

Just happy it’s finally here. However, wish there were more sort options … still only just “alphabetically” or “most recent.”

I just used the new Delicious 2.0 version, and let me tell you, it’s awesome. Yahoo’s Team did a wonderful job!

I hope Yahoo never goes to Microsoft.

MISSING UNBUNDLED TAGS!!!

I am at work, sorting our delicious bookmarks. Frequently I will add a bookmark without sorting through the tags. Later I go to the “unbundled tags” list to fix those tags to fit our already created bundles. I was right in the middle of this action when I received a web page saying I was no longer authorized to enter this account, I tried re-logging in, etc. I finally logged out, closed the page, reopened a new page and re-logged in. Voila, a new Delicious. I knew it was coming, but not when. Of course, the collection marked “unbundled tags” is not longer available. So, I have a bunch of orphaned bookmarks to find! What fun!!!

How is this interface “cleaner”? I’m missing the overview I had.
